Treatment of rainwater before use

Treating rainwater is an essential step before using it. Indeed, rainwater is not clean enough to use in its raw state. It is particularly affected by the effects of pollution. Whether you use the water from your rainwater collector to water your flowers or supply your toilets, the filtration system must be adapted to each situation.

Why treat rainwater before using it ?

The treatment of rainwater is necessary because it is polluted and slightly acidic. Moreover, when it flows on the roof, it carries with it dust, heavy metals, pesticides. It is also contaminated by the decomposition of leaves, dead insects, or the presence of algae. These various elements favor the development of bacteria. Similarly, the stagnation of water results in the appearance of mud.

In addition to being dirty, this rainwater can also have an odor, similar to that of bleach. This is a disadvantage, especially for use for toilets or for washing the floor. Unlike drinking water, it is softer because it is low in mineral content and low in limestone.

Whatever the use, rainwater must be filtered and disinfected.

How to treat rainwater from the cistern ?

The tank is connected to the gutter, at this level, rainwater must also be treated. If you have installed a cistern outside, above ground, it must be emptied in winter and cleaned. These cisterns are made of plastic, so the water retains its acidity.
They can be used for domestic use but in general this tank is intended for watering and outdoor cleaning.

Treat rainwater for irrigation

If you have installed filters at the level of the gutter, the water will be partially cleaned of larger particles. To limit small dirt and micro-organisms, it is wise to install a filter between the gutter and the cistern. There are collectors already containing this system. You have the possibility of installing, or even making, a sand filter to retain the various debris.
To limit the entry of bacteria, algae or even silt, your cistern must be closed.

Can rainwater be treated with bleach ?

Pouring bleach is not recommended, the water oxidizes and this contributes to the proliferation of bacteria.

How to remove odors from rainwater ?

To eliminate odors and make rainwater clearer, treatments exist. These are antioxidants, without chlorine. You mix the product with the water contained in the tank (according to the instructions) and you use it 24 hours later.

Of natural origin, Epur has developed a specific solution for the treatment of rainwater for your cisterns and your rainwater collectors.
