How to sweep your chimney ?

Chimney sweeping is the operation of cleaning the chimney flues which makes it possible to remove the soot and grime which have accumulated in the flues and to check the condition of the latter. This operation is important to keep the chimney flues in good condition and to avoid any risk of fire. It is recommended to have your chimney swept once a year.

There are two sweeping methods :

Mechanical chimney sweeping

Mechanical sweeping consists of scraping the chimney flues by hand to remove the soot and grime that have accumulated there. This method is quite long and not very effective for very dirty chimney flues. It requires the use of special tools, such as a brush and shovel, and involves climbing into chimney flues to clean.

Chemical chimney sweeping

Chemical sweeping, on the other hand, uses specially designed products to dissolve the soot and grime that has accumulated in the chimney flues. This method is faster and more effective than traditional sweeping, especially for very dirty chimney flues. It works thanks to the vapors and the catalytic action of the product, which cause the reaction necessary for the destruction of soot and tar. The dissolved particles are then sucked up using a vacuum cleaner specially designed for this type of cleaning.

Chemical chimney sweeping can be done in various ways:

Sweeping powder

Sold in packets or in bulk. It is used as a curative and preventive treatment for fireplaces, open or closed hearth stoves, wood or coal.

Chimney-sweeping logs

It contains an active ingredient that loosens and breaks down soot and tar in your stove or fireplace.

Chimney sweeping brick

Its patented formula contains 100% active micro-granules and works at very high temperatures. Its role is to release the catalytic elements in order to exterminate the soot and tar accumulated in the flue of your stove or fireplace.

Pellets maintenance

For use only with pellet stoves or boilers. Based on products of natural origin, it destroys soot, tar and removes wood dust while preserving your device.

Recommended products

Good to know : chimney fires are not covered by insurance in the event of the exclusive use of chemical products for chimney sweeping. A sweeping certificate issued by a professional is essential to be compensated in the event of a claim.

However, tests have shown that the combination of chemical sweeping and mechanical sweeping gives the user the assurance of the emptiness and optimum cleaning of the duct. It is advisable to follow the instructions on the packaging exactly, thus limiting the risk of a chimney fire as much as possible and guaranteeing you economy, safety and comfort.
